"When the time comes to retire, what then? In my seventies and having spent many years in the jewelry business, I found that as I could no longer stand on my feet for long periods serving customers, it was now time to retire. However, I had a problem; the social grants for pensioners in the country in which I live are minimal. Therefore, through necessity, I had to put on my thinking cap and find some way of making an extra income to survive.

After considering various and in some instances many impossible ideas, I adopted a determined and positive attitude, towards not allowing the prospect of defeat to take over. To me, the Internet should be able to provide me a way of overcoming the problem. With computerization as the world's master, my instinctive feeling was that this had definite potential in solving my problem.

At this stage, I want to mention that my knowledge of how to use the computer was zero, but that did not mean that I could not learn. Seeking a good friend's advice, I bought the best laptop that fitted my pocket and set about mastering its unusual language, which was not at all easy. I considered myself a slow student and was forever asking probably boring questions. Eventually, mainly through trial and error, my laptop became my best friend. It did not yell when I made mistakes, and it had the patience of Jove. My confidence rose in leaps and bounds.

The next step, was investigating the various moneymaking schemes that are on offer, which all promised extraordinary incomes, weekly, and monthly, whatever you want. I tried some of the surveys available and found that overall, they are only time-consuming and take up costly usage of bytes; furthermore, some of them are just plain information gathering schemes.

Having always enjoyed working with the pen and reading all forms of books, I considered the prospect of writing for payment. EzineArticles created the opportunity for this and with their online help; I started writing articles and short stories, for publication on their Website. As my confidence and knowledge increased over a time, my new writing career developed from a basic author, to one with platinum rated status. This newfound confidence extended to my ability with my friendly computer. I decided the time was now right to start placing bids with various online freelance agencies to write articles, SEO content and anything else that would earn some money.

At the beginning, it was hard and frustrating work, with various rejections but I had made up my mind that this was what I had to do and persevered. Well, it is now history! I write articles and blogs for the web from clients needing them all over the world, and on many subjects. These articles range from travel to IT, to fashion, jewelry, cosmetics, and news. When I started to write, one or two articles per day was all that I could manage, now I have progressed to five, six or more, depending on their content.

This new career in my retirement years is certainly beneficial for my bank account and most satisfying for me. In fact, I am probably working harder now than I did for years and recently I became a partner in a freelance writing service, Bee-Gee Freelance Writers and even helped with the site content.

Please, when you reach retirement age, do not adopt the attitude that life has ended, pull yourself together and go start a new career for yourself, you will be amazed at what you can do when you put your mind to it.
