Have Your Blog Followers Gone Quiet, Or Disappeared Altogether? Advice For Regenerating Your Blog

"Blogging is well known as a brilliant way to regularly add new content, promote your business and develop more leads. However, we are still hearing instances where clients start a blog, enjoy success in the beginning then a few months down the line, things go quiet and followers, comments and shares seem to be a thing of the past. Why is this?

We've had a look at a number of client case studies and have come up with some methods you can employ to keep your blog active and your followers interested.

Firstly, don't relax! So you've built your blog, and have developed a healthy following. Don't just keep posting blindly in the hope they will stay and continue to follow you. Blog readers are a fickle bunch. If the content is not continually interesting and relevant, readers can quickly become bored. To own a successful blog you need to persevere, and with dedication and hard work, keep at it on a regular basis.

Keep your blog looking fresh!

If you want your followers to visit your blog, say once a week; give them something new and interesting to look at. A blog which never changes, always looks the same, and only posts the same type of boring article will very quickly loose followers.

Irregular posting is lazy!

Don't be a lazy blogger. Forgetting to post or leaving it for an extra few days is the worst thing you can do. A blog is a powerful way to build a real connection with your readers and to present yourself to them. With regular posts you can build your reputation in their minds and your relationship with them. Ignore them and they'll simply go off and find someone more interesting to read. Make posting on your blog a regular habit. Play around with it and figure out what your optimum post level per week is, based upon responses and comments. Some of our bloggers post on a daily basis, the minimum for a successful blog seems to be three blogs per week.

Posting regularly will open up more opportunities for two-way communication with your followers too. Think of it this way; if you talk to them, they'll talk to you. If you ignore them, why should they hang around?

Too many adverts are off putting!

Advertising on a blog is a way many bloggers choose to boost their income. There's no doubt it can work but be careful. Bombarding your readers with pop-up adverts and distracting PPC will put them off. The most popular blogs, we have found, are those which are clean, advert free or if they do have adverts, they are carefully placed and not obtrusive in any way. The reader's enjoyment of the blog remains the focus.

Adverts which complement the content of your blog are powerful and can generate you good income. However, at the other end of the spectrum, going nuts and overloading your page with badly designed adverts, all flashing and clashing against each other, and drowning out your own brand identity is a fatal error. Don't let your quality content get lost in a sea of other people's cheap advertising blah!

It's best to stick to no more than three adverts per page. Two good quality adverts, well placed and complimentary to your blog will work much better for all concerned. Think about your readers with courtesy. What do you like to see when you read a blog, the article or a page full of adverts?

Get dressed up and look professional!

On or offline, appearances are so important. Make sure your blog is well dressed at all times. The design, layout and theme of your website are all essential ways of portraying your brand image successfully to readers. The content should reflect you - that's words, pictures and design - the whole package. Your blog should look attractive, professional and fresh. Do a little customer research. Ask for feedback and listen to the comments you receive. Have a look at other popular blogs too. Look at how they are designed to suit their particular subject area or industry.

Your choice of background colour, font and layout can make a huge difference to how your blog is perceived and whether viewers regard YOU as a professional or an amateur. If you have the budget to employ a professional to help you design your blog, we strongly recommend it. If you are building it yourself, then take the time to read about blogs, research other blogs and carefully plan and design your blog - don't be tempted to quickly hash something together. Blogs that look home-made or sloppy never enjoy good results in terms of popularity amongst followers. Try different styles out with a sample group of readers. Ask questions of other successful bloggers. Put the hard work in.

From day one, your blog is an online representative of you and your professional standing. Don't let yourself down.
