"Avoiding the most common blogging mistakes will give you an edge on others in the field and will ensure your success. Most of the following mistakes are caused by enthusiasm or lack of awareness but can easily be avoided if you know what they are. Don't make these mistakes. Your success depends on it!

#1 A Blog With No Purpose

You must know and define your purpose so your blog will have direction. When you are visualizing and developing your blog ask yourself these questions: Why am I blogging? Is my blog informational? Entertaining? A personal log or am I trying to sell something? Who is my target audience? Am I writing a blog for personal or business purposes?

Knowing the purpose of your blog helps you develop goals and plan strategies for achieving your goals. A business oriented blog should be designed to draw traffic and make sales. A blog to document a personal goal such as weight loss or a cross-country bike ride should document your journey not just spectacular events along the way.

#2 Inconsistent Postings

Updating your blog regularly is critical. Your followers expect fresh and informative content on a scheduled basis. When you skip posting content for an extended period your readers will look elsewhere. It is even more damaging to you if your readers don't keep a blog roll or stay on your mailing list.

You don't have to post every day. Just be sure to have original and relevant posts several times a week. If necessary, use scheduled post features offered by most hosting platforms.

#3 Fluff Content

Posting regurgitated or trite content just to get something posted is a mistake often made to avoid mistake number 2. A smart blogger knows the value of providing relevant and high quality content with every post. Avoid generic entries merely to give your readers something to read. That's like sitting down to dinner only to find the food tasteless and bland. You want to satisfy your readers' reasons for visiting your site and keep them coming back.

Quality is always more important than quantity, especially when you are blogging. Develop articles that are thought-provoking and interesting.

#4 Cluttered Format

Are you a creative and entertaining writer and always post high quality content but still fail to draw a large and loyal readership? You may be using a cluttered format and your followers feel your blog is time-consuming to read.

Visualize yourself as your reader. You know reading long entries without breaks becomes tedious and you tend to lose interest. Therefore, keep your posts short and to the point. Use bullets to buttress an idea instead of a wordy paragraph. Try to incorporate images to break up your ideas. Being visual creatures, your readers will appreciate a creative and appealing presentation.

#5 Interaction Not Encouraged

Giving your readers a way to interact with you and including your readers' thoughts and ideas in your entries is good for your blog. Being inclusive promotes interaction between you and your readers. Most people follow a blog because the subject interests them. Therefore, your followers have something in common and are probably interested in the thoughts and experiences of your followers; it provides motivation to follow your blog. Use techniques to encourage participation such as including thought-provoking questions in your posts or urging readers to join your mailing list.

Of course there are many more mistakes made by bloggers, but these five are commonly seen and are recognized to have serious adverse effects on the success of your site. Know who your target audience is and present up-to-date, relevant material regularly. View your blog from your followers' perspective and make improvements to correct any shortcomings you find.
