3 Tips For Effective Link Building

"Link building is one of the most important tasks you can undertake when doing search engine optimization on your website. The reason for this is that the number of one-way inbound links coming to your website is used as a measure of your sites popularity and hence used by the search engines to determine your ultimate ranking for a given keyword phrase. However, although link building seems like a relatively simple task, there are a number of pitfalls to watch out for. In this short article I will give you 3 tips that every successful link building campaign should use.

1. Don't buy links or take part in link exchanges. Back in the day, it was all the rage to buy links or to take part in so called link exchanges. These were sites where you placed your link in return for letting them place a link on your site. Although they were effective for a few years, the major search engines cottoned onto the practice and now heavily penalize anyone who uses them. Avoid this advice at your peril, it may cost you more than just a few dollars for some links!

2. Spread your links out over time. Link velocity is important. By this I mean spread out the number of links that you generate over time, especially for brand new sites. For a new site I would recommend that you don't build any more than 50 links a day initially and build it up slowly over time. Think about it this way - unless you have a new product or service that hits the headlines on the national news you are unlikely to get thousands of people linking to your website overnight. The search engines realize this and they seem to penalize huge jumps in the number of inbound links for a newly established sites as this doesn't appear natural to them. More established sites with higher page rank and an aged domain don't need to worry so much about this.

3. Diversify your link sources while keeping them relevant. Link relevancy is very important. Forget spamming your website out to thousands of blogs or even directories. These kinds of links will have little value and may even get you penalized. Its also important to mix up your sources so don't just use one method such as forum posting for link building, mix it up and keep it natural looking.

Above all, when it comes to link building keep it white hat and ethical. By that I mean, don't resort to underhand tactics such as using software to spam thousands of links around the internet. This can be quite easily detected by the search engines and you will almost certainly be penalized for it. These kind of links also have low value and are often disregarded altogether in any case.

The best advice I can give when it comes to link building is.. hire a professional to do it for you. Although its an important task it can be time consuming, boring to do and above all, it can be damaging to your site if done badly.
