"Let me preface this article with this beginning paragraph. Being an affiliate on the Internet can be a very lucrative venture but you have to know what you are doing. This is not a get rich quick venture so if that is what you are expecting, you may be disappointed. I think the biggest secret to affiliate marketing is that it takes a lot of hard work to get started. New affiliate marketers are often duped into believing you can make $80,000 overnight or in a week. The truth is that the people who make this kind of money in a matter of days have put in extensive time and money to make it happen. With that in mind, let us start from the beginning.

An affiliate is a person who makes money by advertising and promoting a product for a company or individual. A set commission for sales is paid out each month. There are so many products out there to promote. In my opinion, you should never promote a product you do not believe in. If you are selling vitamins, then you should at least be a consumer of the product to determine if it is a good product or not. You might find that the product has serious flaws and you may reconsider the product for something else. No matter what kind of product you are selling, whether it is a tangible product or information product; know how the product works and its positive points. Take those positive points and promote the heck out of those points. Speaking of promotion... how are we going to do that?

You can promote your website through web 2.0 sites, writing articles, and pay-per-click methods.

1. A web 2.0 sites include web communities like Blogger, Squidoo, HubPages, niche specific forums, YouTube, and the list goes on. These are places where you can advertise for free and not spend one penny. Places like Facebook you can advertise for a small fee and reach millions of people that are online using the system. The possibilities are endless.

2. If you like to write, being an author of articles can provide you with a positive flow of traffic, especially if you submit your articles to article directories. Just go to Google and type in the words "article directory" and a whole cornucopia of sites waiting to submit your article will be at your fingertips. Read all the submission guidelines carefully before releasing your article to be sure the article meets the standard of the directory.

3. Pay-per-click method can be very expensive but is the best way to get targeted traffic that is looking specifically for what you are selling. A WORD OF WARNING.... read up on what you are doing before you start with this method because if you don't, you can blow through a very significant amount of money with negative results. Again... read up on this one first...do not just wing it with this one.
